New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018

A New York Times Notable Book

The #1 New York Times bestseller.

A brilliant and brave investigation into the medical and scientific revolution taking place around psychedelic drugs--and the spellbinding story of his own life-changing psychedelic experiences

When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research.

A unique and elegant blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind is a triumph of participatory journalism. By turns dazzling and edifying, it is the gripping account of a journey to an exciting and unexpected new frontier in our understanding of the mind, the self, and our place in the world. The true subject of Pollan's "mental travelogue" is not just psychedelic drugs but also the eternal puzzle of human consciousness and how, in a world that offers us both suffering and joy, we can do our best to be fully present and find meaning in our lives.

"My wife Ivy and I have been avid readers of Michael Pollan's previous articles and book-length works especially those involving healthful eating and the food industry. By way of background I am a forty-something surgeon and my wife is an author and blogger with MS who has on occasion had to cope with condition-related mood issues. Without having done much research into the psychedelics other than to ensure they are indeed medically safe (as this book discusses in more detail) a couple years back we participated in several overseas guided ayahuasca (a psychedelic plant mentioned in How to Change Your Mind) sessions. Our experiences as a couple participating both to obtain hoped-for medical benefits and for, in my case, the "betterment of well people" to quote Pollan's book have been discussed online and mirror the experiences described by Mr. Pollan and by the numerous academic professionals, researchers, and patients interviewed throughout this journalistic masterpiece. To describe this further is beyond the scope of my review but we can vouch that this book is one hundred percent serious journalism and that research investment into the study of psychedelics as medications for treatment resistant psychiatric conditions and as spiritual aids for the betterment of humanity is very much needed and is well underway as described in detail in Pollan's book.

As for the prosaic the book is over 400 pages and written at an advanced level and will engage the most curious of readers. The book is organized into six chapters. The first is a broad introduction to the topic of psychedelics and the second discusses psychedelic mushrooms which possess an active ingredient that is the topic of many current-era human research studies. The third chapter discusses the first wave of psychedelic research (I had no idea that in the 1950's these substances were academically studied and thought to hold great promise only for that research to be practically shut down as a result of the political upheaval of the late 60's) and is of great interest to anyone interested in the history of these substances even if one has no interest in their pharmacological effects. The fourth discusses the author's own personal experiences as a middle-aged adult with the psychedelics and he is spot-on with his fascinating first person descriptions of the experience. Finally, chapters five and six discuss current research, expected medical benefits and benefits to the well-person, the neuroscience behind the actual function of psychedelics in the brain, and proposed solutions for safely distributing the psychedelics to persons who could benefit.

For many readers this book will "change your mind" about the loaded term "psychedelic" and will open you up to at least the possibility the world could be a better place if these substances could be studied with as much zeal as are other pharmaceuticals and could be offered safely for the benefit of the millions of persons worldwide suffering from conditions related to dysfunction of the mind."

  • This book is many things. It's entertaining to say the least. Pollan takes the heavily loaded topic of psychedelics (LSD and psilocybin) and analyzes it from the compelling perspective of a 63-year-old journalist who's "not at all sure he's ever had a single 'spiritually significant' experience." Every few pages, I stopped to wonder how this old guy (sorry, Mr. Pollan) is so much more fluent on the topic than me, a 25-year-old hippie vegan.

But that's exactly what makes the book so important. Psychedelics don't need to be locked in a role as mind-expanding recreational drugs for young hippies. Research suggests they can play an important role in combating mental illness, and if properly regulated, provide psychological benefits for "the betterment of well people." If there's anyone best suited to help society move past the 1960s and take a fresh, honest look at psychedelics, it's Michael Pollan.

Also consider listening to his podcast with Tim Ferriss about this new book.
  • I was thrilled to learn that Michael Pollan was going to tackle the subject of psychedelics and the promising research being done by MAPS and Johns Hopkins, among others. I love his previous books. He is a skilled writer and does such a great job explaining complex topics. I got my copy one day early (thank you to 's efficient delivery service). I am only partially through it, and so far it is fascinating. His recent appearance on Tim Ferriss' podcast was tremendous and is a great introduction to the book and his careful handling of the topic. The potential value for the use of psychedelics in mental health treatment must be fully explored. I hope this book helps further that exploration.
  • Last night I finished reading Michael Pollan's latest book, How to Change Your Mind - What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence (Penguin Press, 2018). I'd ordered the book pre-publication, so they sent it to me on the day of its release. I'd been happily anticipating the book as I've admired Pollan's previous works very much. His journalism has long dealt with 'Gaia-related' topics and his even-handed, well written and researched presentations have always included the aspects of conciousness at their core. I can unhesitatingly recommend this volume. He presents both a history of modern (1950-70s) 'psychedelic' research studies & explorations and a current report of the newly resumed studies in the many uses of entheogens. This includes both overviews of clinical studies, practices of 'shamanic traditions', and his own personal experiences. I'm sure you'd recognize the names of many of the principle players & circumstances he describes; old friends of psychedelic literature & exploration.

I think it's great that such a thoughtful book would be offered by this well-accomplished 'mainstream' journalist. This can only lend more weight to the general public & our authorities to developing a less reactionary and more sane view of these sacramental benefactors. Pollan, like all of us, is very concerned about how we can continue to sustainably exist as individuals, a society, a species. He sees that there may be some allies, close to hand, that have long been available to help us adjust our perceptions and continue on an evolutionary journey, to grow & to expand rather than self-destructing. "How to change your mind" is a well chosen phrase, an observation that often our 'problems' are ones of perception rather than actual unyielding obstacles. Good work, good book, good gracious.

Midnight Train to Paris City of Light Book 3 edition by Juliette Sobanet Romance eBooks Reviews

  • Juliette Sobanet is a new writer for me and I found myself enjoying this book very much from the first page. The story involves twin girls who have a rather rough upbringing as their mother, a former prostitute, finds herself destitute after her husband leaves the family to fend for themselves. The girls share the common bond that many twins have, the ability to know how the other is doing emotionally. The situation goes from bad to worse when their mother returns to the only way she knows to make money. Flash forward to the present and see that one of the twins, Jillian Chambord is a successful newspaper journalist just about ready to publish her expose of the powerful DC political bigwig that ruined the lives of the twins growing up, meet the justice he so richly deserves. She is talking to her editor about the article when her ex boyfriend and former CIA investigator shows up at her office, saying that Jillian needs to leave, as her twin, Isla, has been abducted. Now a private investigator, Samuel has been hired by the wealthy Morel family of Paris to find Isla, the fiance' of their son, Fredderic. Little did Jillian know that heading to Paris and the Morel castle was just the start of the hunt for Isla.that would take the couple back to another time when another abduction had happened on the infamous and opulent Orient Express train. But Jillian will do anything in her power to save Isla from a fate that has been waiting for her for the last 75 years.
  • I have absolutely loved Juliette's Paris books, so I couldn't wait to read this one. This is the first serial I've read, and it's an interesting approach. I read each one as it came out. I can't decide if I had to do it all over again if I would've waited and read it all at once. But regardless, I really enjoyed the story.

Juliette's other Paris books are probably considered chicklit or women's fiction. This book was quite a departure though. I would call this a time travel romantic mystery. What I loved the most about this story is that it was totally unique! I kept constantly thinking, where did she come up with this? I literally felt transported from present day to Paris in 1937.

Juliette has a strong voice and it worked really well in this story. I absolutely loved Samuel. I'm very impressed at Juliette being able to pull off a story like this and make it work. Would highly recommend.
  • The Midnight Train to Paris by Juliette Sobanet

This story takes you on a ride of a most famous train and through time and back again to the present.
When one can put one's life in danger to save others the harmful effects of the past nightmares and mysteries.
Where a newspaper journalist and an ex-boyfriend are reunited and thrown together in a case, set out to find the answers of several mysteries of the past. Set in beautiful backgrounds of France, Paris's country sides, the mountains of the Alps and surrounding areas and also set on the famous Orient Express train.. Mysteries told and webs unwound to find answers and help find out about deaths committed long ago and save them from happening again in the present.

A whirlwind story of adventure, life, love and excitement. Where it will take this couple in future stories will be up to this wonderful story telling author. She will have you wanting more. I will definitely look forward to reading more of her book.

Thank you for a enjoyable read.
  • I received this book in installations as the author wrote it. That is the first time I have ever read a Serial Book and I
found it quite appealing. Will do it again, that is for sure.

This is one of those books that takes the characters back in time via the Orient Express to solve a European Murder
75 years earlier. If they can not get their in time....generations of people's lives will be forever be affected in a tragic way.

I loved this Author's writing style. and will want to read the rest of her books that will come out in July.

If you have never tried a serial read...do yourself a favor and give it a try. Oh, you must have an e-reader to do so.
  • I enjoyed all the twists and turns that were so unexpected. Very fast paced on the edge of your seat story. Just when you think you have it figured out, something else is thrown into the mix. If there is a sequel, I WILL be reading it. I highly recommend this book.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Love Tanya Eby as narrator. The story had me so entranced while at work that it kept me focused and my daynflew by.
  • Good story. Well written. The book has way too much repetitive lurid detail in the violence scenes. Same with sex.-- too much and too repetitive. The story line, however, is valid, imaginative, and worth exploring.
  • This is about a young woman who must travel back in time to save her abducted twin today. It has mystery, romance, betrayal and murder.

Although it takes more than an hour to read it, it is so worth it

For John Urschel, what began as an insatiable appetite for puzzles as a child developed into mastery of the elegant systems and rules of mathematics. By the time he was thirteen, Urschel was auditing a college-level calculus course. But when he joined his high school football team, a new interest began to eclipse the thrill he felt in the classroom. Football challenged Urschel in an entirely different way, and he became addicted to the physical contact of the sport. After he accepted a scholarship to play at Penn State, his love of math was rekindled. As a Nittany Lion, he refused to sacrifice one passion for the other. Against the odds, Urschel found a way to manage his double life as a scholar and an athlete. While he was an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, he simultaneously pursued his PhD in mathematics at MIT.

Weaving together two separate narratives, Urschel relives for us the most pivotal moments of his bifurcated life. He explains why, after Penn State was sanctioned for the acts of former coach Jerry Sandusky, he declined offers from prestigious universities and refused to abandon his team. He describes his parents’ different influences and their profound effect on him, and he opens up about the correlation between football and CTE and the risks he took for the game he loves. Equally at home discussing Georg Cantor’s work on infinities and Bill Belichick’s playbook, Urschel reveals how each challenge—whether on the field or in the classroom—has brought him closer to understanding the two different halves of his own life, and how reason and emotion, the mind and the body, are always working together. “So often, people want to divide the world into two,” he observes. “Matter and energy. Wave and particle. Athlete and mathematician. Why can’t something (or someone) be both?”

An original and scientifically rigorous exploration of the darkest recesses of the human mind.

What is it about evil that we find so compelling? From our obsession with serial killers to violence in pop culture, we seem inescapably drawn to the stories of monstrous acts and the aberrant people who commit them. But evil, Dr. Julia Shaw argues, is all relative, rooted in our unique cultures. What one may consider normal, like sex before marriage, eating meat, or being a banker, others may find abhorrent. And if evil is only in the eye of the beholder, can it be said to exist at all?

In Evil, Dr. Shaw uses case studies from academia, examples from popular culture, and anecdotes from everyday life to break down complex information and concepts, such as the neuroscience of evil, the psychology of bloodlust, and workplace misbehavior. In grappling with thorny dilemmas - from "Would I kill baby Hitler?" to "Why do I want to murder my spouse?" - Dr. Shaw offers listeners a better understanding of the world, ourselves, and our Google search histories.

"A fascinating exploration of our preconceived notions of what we label as evil. The author helps us to release that evil is a subjective term and that it's important not to rush to judgement. Reading this book made me question my own long held assumptions. I found the thought experiments and the studies referenced by the author really helped me to better understand the complexities of human behavior."

"I am a collector of journals. I have the best intentions of writing in all of them, and then I end up donating the bulk of my collection because I don't feel a connection with the pages. This book is different. Leon's approach is different. Whether you have seen The Kindness Diaries or not, this book can resonate with anyone. It is fun and a little chaotic (in the best way). It is encouraging and upbeat. And if you so choose, you can even color in the pages to make it truly personalized. I have ordered copies for my friends because I think the value of this book exceeds the cost. More love, less hate. It isn't that difficult and yet we live in a time where it seems like the opposite is rampant. Like Leon, I believe that change begins with kindness and kindness is so under appreciated. This book will change that, and if you buy it and do the exercises, you can change the world- one kind act at a time."

It isn't that difficult and yet we live in a time where it seems like the opposite is rampant. Like Leon, I believe that change begins with kindness and kindness is so under appreciated. This book will change that, and if you buy it and do the exercises, you can change the world- one kind act at a time.
  • Very rarely, I hear a phrase so poignant it is able to stop time., It leaves me frozen, and emotions once pushed down rush to the surface and explode, all superficial thoughts stopping for the briefest of moments. In this place appears a gap in time, an immeasurable space experienced by everyone at some point in their lives, the moment where it becomes clear a change is necessary. Most often, when this happenesd to me, it’s not truly the phrase that is unusual, instead, it’s a simple “run of the mill” utterance for many who hear it; it passes other people by as if it were floating on the breeze. But, for me, that sentence cut me, it went in, fast, deep straight to my heart. That phrase manifested not as a thought but as a feeling, a visceral physical reaction, something my body once had but lost. It was once there, but from a place both forgotten and neglected, this phrase bought it back. This feeling was brought back while watching the Kindness Diaries and then more so again and again while reading “Go be Kind”. These reactions seeped deep into my consciousness and would not be shaken, they had taken hold and would only grow.

“Go Be Kind” is the book by the Leon Logothetis, who is also the creator of the Netflix and Prime show The Kindness Diaries. The show is Leon traveling the world with no money relying solely on the kindness of others for this survival (he does not accept money only kindness). “Go Be Kind” is a more detailed journal that is independent of the TV series, but makes many references to the show in its text. In a sense, it gives the reader a road map to their own kindness journey.

Yes, there was another truth when I first received the “Go be Kind book”. To be completely honest, I thought it was absolute garbage! I skimmed it and was put off by the font. Yes, that’s right, the font offended me, you see, I am a 12 point Arial Font guy and this “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” style font looked liked a kids book to me. I stopped at a couple of pages and thought it was simply recycled content from the TV show It appeared to me that Leon was trying to squeeze some extra pennies out of his show by writing a book.
Needless to say, I left it where I skimmed it, in the bathroom. But, on a later visit, I decided it might be worth a second chance. After watching the netflix series, I knew Leon was not a penny squeezing kind of guy. so I picked it up and started to read it! Imagine that. And, with a new perspective and an open mind, my feelings changed. Each chapter is organized into unique “adventures” and if you read and try and follow the exercises, it really probes deep and forces you to think, to examine who you are and what it really means to be kind.
In order to help its readers, the text is written in a supportive style, and, often, it preemptively has an answer to the challenges the “adventures” present. Similar to the overall theme of the book, it seems to treat the reader with the same compassion and kindness it teaches. However, some of the adventures are particularly challenging. For example, the third adventure asks the reader to find people who might appear lonely, or someone who looks different that you, and give them a genuine compliment. It sounds simple right? However, for me, and I’m sure for many others who picked this book up with the intention of learning to be more kind, while simple, it was not easy at all. Nevertheless, perseverance delivers. Actually following through with the exercise feels uplifting and freeing!
Some of the adventures are more straightforward, while others are considerably more difficult, such as approaching and talking to strangers about kindness. Boy, that was a tough one, yet the exercise playing cell phone roulette and just calling someone and connecting seamed easier, but no less meaningful. Lots of adventures involve going out into the world and connecting with those around you, but quite a few are reflective, almost therapeutic exercises such as examining when and why you treated someone poorly.
It is clear that Leon has really thought this book through, it’s a journey in of itself. I would guess these are all activities that Leon performed and meditated on himself over the past years on his journey to being kind both with himself and others. In addition, throughout the book, there are references to being lonely or feeling like an outsider. It’s certainly a book for us outsiders, people who feel isolated, or at least have at some point in their lives. Leon shares how this happened to him at school and how it changed and shaped his life.
In summary, the book will continue to change me and others who read it. It has given me the gap that only kindness will, the gap between an event and my reaction to it, one that will help me deal first with myself, then with my family, and finally to engage with the world with a greater sense of connection, compassion and kindness.
Read the book, do the exercises, ignore the font, you will grow to love it!, watch the show, and be kind- starting with yourself.
  • This is not just a book or journal. It's more of an action guide to a kindness adventure! The world around us keeps giving us messages that things are dark, sad, hopeless, and just downright horrible. I found Leon’s Netflix show "The Kindness Diaries" (check it out!) a few months back when I was feeling pretty low. I cried every episode; they were tears of deep gratitude and connection. Connection because I was reminded that there is kindness everywhere around us and we have more in common than we realize, and gratitude because Leon and his crew were out there finding ways to remind all of us that kindness matters and is possible every day, in ways big and small. I’ve always been told by others that I’m a kind person, but through Leon’s show and Facebook page, I've begun to realize I have become rather self absorbed in my own problems and worries. I was so bogged down with work and life and worry that I had stopped going outside my comfort zone to really reach out to others. Let’s face it – we can all find ourselves stuck there! When this book arrived in the mail, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would it be tiny print text of narrative, with a few exercises thrown in at the end of each chapter? Nope! I should have known that with Leon’s engaging style and adventurous spirit, it would be something far different! I was thrilled to open it up and begin looking through it. It’s A KINDNESS ADVENTURE ACTION GUIDE, easy to read and follow, full of energizing and meaningful words of wisdom and guides for putting kindness into action.

I highly recommend the hardcover version, since it is designed for you to draw, write, color, journal in, etc.

Get this book – buy one or a few to share with others – and be part of the change the world needs. Go Be Kind! It’s up to us to make the world the kind place we want it to be. Kindness matters and love wins. See you on the journey!
